The ongoing military operations in Borno State has forced more than 2,000 Nigerians living in
border villages to flee to the neigbouring Niger Republic, making them refugees in Difa, Niger
Republic. Also, residents of
Maiduguri, which is also one of the States in which the President declared a state of emergency, and other communities far from the border, who did not want to
be caught in the cross-fire between the military and the Boko Haram sect, have also fled to some neighbouring states,
including Kano and Bauchi.
The state of emergency seems to be yeilding results because according to the Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, a total of 20 terrorists were apprehended as they fled. The military also said 10 Boko Haram members were killed,
while 65 others were arrested during encounters with the terrorists on
Friday. I sincerely hope peace will be restored to the North and Nigeria as a whole.
