The Vatican announced today that 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI is to stand down as leader of the Catholic church because his strength was 'no longer adequate to continue in office due to his advanced age'.
He said: 'I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.' He will officially retire at 8pm Rome time (7pm GMT) on February 28. He is the first in 600 years to resign as Pope.
