UNIUYO STUDENTS PROTEST OVER POOR INFRASTRUCTURE DESPITE INCREASE IN FEES

The students of University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State living in the the main campus in town protested last night marching along the popular Ikpa and University Roads, damaging several things including the school’s main signpost and disrupting traffic over failure of the school's management to provide essential facilities for conducive habitation and learning despite the hike in the cost of tuition.  The military security outfit, Operation Thunder was called in to restore some level of sanity.

The students who are currently writing their end of semester examinations said they have not had sufficient running water and power in their hostels and that it has become unbearable to live in the present condition.

But the Dean of Students, Professor Eno Ibanga said all is being done to ensure that students are comfortable on campus. He attributed the power problem to a faulty generator, which has been replaced adding that people just hide under the pretext of protests to cause trouble.

“We are not God, even machines break down. When student asked for light, we bought and installed new generator for them. We are repairing the generator that went bad. We dedicated a special generator for pumping water for the hostels. Now we are writing towards refurbishing some of the rooms in the hostels. “The N8, 500 per student, multiplied by 600 students in M2 is N5.1m. we repaired that hostel with about N60m. We are trying to make sure that things are working but people are trying to sabotage our efforts." He said.
