UK ADOPTS IKOT EKPENE PRISONS AS MODEL IN AFRICA

The ultra modern Ikot Ekpene Prisons in Akwa Ibom, which boasts of the latest correctional facilities has been adopted as a Model Reformation Centre in Africa by the United Kingdom.
The governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, mentioned this during the president and chairman of council, Nigerian Insitute of Management (Chartered), Dr. Micheal Olawale's courtesy visit to Uyo on Friday. The governor explained that the prison is to train the inmates for post-prison endeavors and to prepare and assist them in re-socializing.
This is commendable.

TEACHER HELPS STUDENTS CHEAT COS' " THEY'RE DUMB AS HELL"

Fifth Grade math teacher, Shayla Smith, has been accused of  giving students answers and changing wrong answers after collecting the tests.She said she helped her student cheat because "they're dumb as hell". Her words were, 'I had to give your kids, or your students, the answers because they're dumb as hell,'" Jones told test-cheating tribunal. She claims she didn't speak out earlier because she feared reproof or reprisal from the principal.

AURORA SHOOTING: SUSPECT CALLED A PSYCHIATRIST MINUTES BEFORE SHOOTING

Defense attorneys revealed in court on Thursday that the suspect in the Colorado shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 wounded, tried unsuccessfully to call his university psychiatrist nine minutes before he opened fire during a Batman movie premiere.

James Holmes placed the call to a number at a hospital at the University of Colorado,  where he could reach psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, defense attorney said.

It wasn't clear why he called Fenton, and she wasn't immediately available to talk to him. Holmes is accused in the July 20 shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 wounded.

The detail about the call came out during a hearing about Holmes' relationship with Fenton, to whom he mailed a package containing a notebook that reportedly contained violent descriptions of an attack.

Omg!! If only she had taken the call, the disaster might have been avoided.

JOURNALISTS MOURN VANGUARD ENTERTAINEMENT EDITOR

The Nigerian media was thrown into mourning yesterday over the sudden death of the Vanguard Newspaper’s Entertainment Editor, Ogbonnaya Amadi. The journalist, who would have marked his 50th birthday by December this year, was said to have died in his office after an asthma attack. His colleagues made efforts to rush him to the  nearby hospital for treatment but met with heavy traffic on the Mile 2-Apapa Express Way, Lagos. He died on the way to the hospital.

Family members, friends and media colleagues thronged his Ogba, Ikeja residence yesterday to console his grief-stricken widow and children, who were yet to come to terms with the news of the sudden death of their father and breadwinner.

So so sad. May God give his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

PARALYMPICS: NIGERIAN WINS GOLD MEDAL, SETS WORLD RECORD

Nigeria's Yakubu Adesokan has won a gold medal in Power lifting and also sent the World record crashing on Thursday with his amazing 178 kg lift in his men’s 48 category which was over three times his body weight. This is the first gold for Nigeria at the Paralympics and this is a deserving compensation to Nigerians after our disappointing feat at the just concluded Olympics.

LUGARD AIMIUWU: CBN SHOULD ENCOURAGE THE USE OF COINS

The President and Chairman of Council, National Institute of Marketing Nigeria, Chief Lugard Aimiuwu, advised Nigerians against taking positions on the issue of restructuring the country's currencies, but to explore other advantages the currency restructuring could bring about, especially the coin usage.

“Maybe they should be encouraged to support a culture of having coin boxes all over the place where people can pay for things in coins. For instance, the dual carriage rail system they say they are doing from Lagos to Ibadan; if they ask the passengers to pay with coins, that will support the culture of coin usage.

It is not professional to write off a policy without having facts and figures, but one thing that is very obvious to me is that if you have N5,000 in one note on the same size of paper for the other notes, the cost of producing it will be cheaper", he said.

The estimated cost of minting the proposed new currencies is alleged to be N40bn.

CYNTHIA'S MURDER: PHARMACEUTICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA RELEASES STATEMENT

The Pharmaceutical  Society of Nigeria faulted the arraignment of the two pharmacists, Orji Osita and Maduakor Chukwunonso, for the murder of Cynthia Osokogu.
At a press conference on Thursday, the President, PSN, Mr. Azubike Okwor, said both pharmacists were people who should have been punished separately if at all.

ANDY RODDICK SET TO RETIRE AFTER US OPEN

The top American man for the last decade, and the last American to win a Grand Slam event, will retire from tennis after the U.S Open. Roddick made this announcement in a news conference today.

Roddick has battled injuries in the last couple of years, including this year, he said  he felt it coming.

Roddick has 32 career ATP World Tour titles. He has four doubles titles. He reached No. 1 in the world for the first time in November 2003, becoming the youngest American (21 years, 3 months) to end the year at No. 1.

He is a three-time Wimbledon finalist (2004-05, '09), losing to Roger Federer each time.

Roddick also owns 33 Davis Cup victories, second in U.S. Davis Cup history, and he helped lead the U.S.A to a Davis Cup title in 2007.

He will be missed by his fans.

PREGNANT WOMAN DELIVERS ON BOARD AIRCRAFT

A 35 year-old pregnant woman gave birth on board Emirates flight from Dubai to Manila, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Vietnam. The Filipina woman gave birth to a baby boy in the bathroom of a the plane. The proud mom, identified only as Nedz, and her husband planned to name the boy EK - the Middle East airline's flight code.

Nedz, who was six months pregnant, went into labor on August 22 aboard the long- distance flight two and a half hours before touchdown. She eventually gave birth in the bathroom, and the baby was swaddled in airline blankets.
The youngest passenger was also having trouble breathing , so the crew gave him an oxygen mask.
When the plane landed, the family was rushed to a local hospital where the little boy remained in the neonatal unit.

CHUDDY K DROPPED FROM HEADIES 'NEXT RATED' CATEGORY

 

 

The 'Go Gaga" singer has been dropped from the next rated category of  The Headies 2012 Awards. This is coming less than 24 hours after the organizers released the list of nominees for the 2012 edition of the awards. 

According to the organizers, he was dropped because he released his debut album 'I am Me" in 2010, next rated nominees must be unreleased as at the time of the nomination.

A statement released by the organizers of the awards states, 'Evidence has emerged that Chuddy K previously released an album titled "I am Me" in 2012 and therefore will not be listed in the Next Rated Category'.

Chuddy K has been replaced by upcoming rapper, Flossick.

50 CENTS' LONG TIME MANAGER COMMITS SUICIDE

 

Music Executive, Chris Lightly, 44, has died. He was found dead in his home this morning. The hip hop veteran apparently shot himself in the head in his Bronx apartment. He was found this morning with a gun next to his body. He was 50 Cents' manager. It was reported that he may be dealing with financial issues following a divorce last year which included owing millions to the IRS.

Lighty's last tweet on Aug. 28 says, "Life is about perspective. It's not what you see, but how you see it. What you see is what you get."

Why do people do this? It's the coward's way out.  So sad. May he RIP.

KSB ATTACKS WANDE COAL, DON JAZZY OVER NUDITY IN VIDEOS

Top Nigerian Gospel Singer Kenny Saint Best, has lashed out at Mavin  Record Boss, Don Jazzy and his artiste, Wande Coal over the nudity contained in his new video, 'Go Low'. She told them to stop bringing nudity back into Nigerian mucic videos as this is leading to the  increase in rape cases in the country or be stopped by God.

KSB said, "Naked girl in Wande Coal's new video is a thumb down from me. We have kids watching. You are bringing nudity back to Nigerian [music] videos to increase cases of rape in our society. It has stopped. Please stop it.
"We don't want rape cases to increase. Please Wande Coal and Don Jazzy, stop this nudity in your music videos before God stops you. My dear brother (Wande Coal), the mercy and the favour of God were the elements that brought you this far, not nude girls in your music video. I say NO to NUDITY."

I think nudity in videos should be banned. We have kids watching this videos and that it's ok to get naked in front of a camera is not the kind of message we want to pass to them. Just saying.

Armed robbers attacked FinBank located on Isolo way, Ajao Estate yesterday killing two people, an okada driver and a police man, in the process.

DANA CRASH: RELATIVES OF VICTIMS TO RECEIVE N2.48B IN COMPENSATION

The insurance companies that insured the Dana Aircraft that crashed in Lagos on June 3, is expected to pay N2.48bn in compensation to relatives of the 153 passengers who died in the accident. Each passenger of the ill-fated plane was insured for $100,000, while each of the four cabin crew members and two pilots were insured for $150,000 and $250,000 respectively.

This means the family of each of the passengers will get $100,000 or about N15.7m, for the four crew members, their families will get N23.55m each, while the respective families of the pilot and the co-pilot will be given N39.25m each, totaling about N2.48b

The compensation will be paid upon verification of the rightful beneficiaries.

I really hope this gets done on time 'cos knowing Nigeria, they will drag  the process for so long until the beneficiaries give up.

The couple welcomed their son yesterday night via surrogate after struggling with infertility, miscarriage, and a breast cancer battle for Guiliana. The couple announced via Twitter this morning.
“The ‘Duke’ has landed! Edward Duke Rancic was welcomed into the world last night at 7lbs 4oz,” the Apprentice winner writes. “G & I feel blessed beyond words…We did it!”

CYNTHIA'S MURDER: HOTEL SACKS EMPLOYEES FOR NEGLIGENCE

Cosmilla Hotel, Amuwo Odofin, has sacked some of its employees following the murder of Cynthia Osokogu in the hotel. The hotel management was angry that no one suspected anything when the alleged murder was taking place despite the fact that Cynthia, who was in Room C1, fought her assailants and made a noise.

The hotel employees were also sacked for not verifying the true identity of her assailants, who used a fake name  to lodge at the hotel. Also, they failed to register Cynthia at the counter, as a result there was no record of Cynthia in the hotel which made it difficult for police to ascertain the identity of Cynthia. She was in the morgue for two weeks before her body was identified.

Holly Madison, the ex-girlfriend of the 86 year old founder of Payboy, Hugh Hefner, is pregnant. She's expecting her first child with her boyfriend of nine years, party promoter Pasquale Rotella.

Madison, 33, hasn’t been shy about her desire to have children. She turned down the offer to renew her "Peepshow" contract in anticipation that she would eventually conceive.

"I've wanted kids and that's something I'm definitely doing as soon as possible, it is something that the time in my life is right for" says the blond beauty. She's 12 weeks along.

She wanted a baby with Hefner, but I definitely agree with her that right now is her time. Congrats girl.

PROPOSED N5,000 NOTE: CBN DISMISSES INFLATION FEARS

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday dismissed fears that the planned introduction of N5000 note could engender inflation.
The apex bank said the fears expressed by Nigerians, including economists and finance experts, had  no basis in economics.
It  threw a challenge to  economists  against  the move to make public,  any theory that  opposes  higher currency denominations.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY STUDENT JUMPS TO HER DEATH

 Marta Corey-Ochoa commited suicide last night by throwing herself off a dorm building at Columbia University. On her Facebook page, she proudly declared herself a member of the Class of 2016(graduating class) at Columbia University, her father’s alma mater but she never made it to the lecture halls of the ivy league college.

Just two hours after a meet-and-greet for freshmen at her dorm on Monday night, she apparently jumped to her death from a 14th floor window.
Police do not think her plunge was an accident, and a source said Corey-Ochoa had a history of psychiatric problems.
Corey-Ochoa’s parents were devastated by the loss of their only child.

$5MILLION DONATION NOT GOING TO FAMILIES OF AURORA SHOOTING VICTIMS

Families of the Aurora shooting victims' families held a joint press conference in Denver on Tuesday to voice their anger and demand "a robust voice" in the handling of money given in their loved ones' names to Giving First and the Colorado Organization for Victims Assistance (COVA).

The foundation has been collecting money from both private and corporate donors for victims caught in the Aurora theater. So far, more than $5 million has rolled in.
But instead of going to the victims and their families or to victims who are struggling to pay bills due to incapacitation resulting from injuries sustained from the shooting, the money has been doled out to non-profits and government agencies, said Teves, father of 24 year old Alex Teeves who lost his life in the shooting.
The fund was set up with the endorsement of the Governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, who has not directly answered victims' complaints, Teeves said.

WHY DAVIDO COULDN'T PERFORM AT D'BANJ'S UK CONCERT

The Dami Duro crooner couldn't perform on Monday at D'banj's UK show because he wasn't granted the required work permit by the British Embassy.
“I regret to let you know that I will not be performing along side my most respected big brother and friend D’BANJ at the scheduled show of August 27, 2012 in London,” his statement read.

“I am both a Nigerian citizen, as well as an American citizen, I carry both the Nigerian and the American passports. As an American citizen, I do not require a visa to enter the United Kingdom, however I require a work permit in the UK for any paid performance such as the scheduled August 27, 2012 in London, that is the law in the United Kingdom.

SYLVESTER STALLON LOSES ANOTHER LOVED ONE

Just six weeks after unexpectedly losing his 36-year-old son, Sage, the actor has lost his only sister. Toni Ann Filiti, his 48-year-old half-sister , succumbed to lung cancer on Sunday. She died at their mother Jackie Stallone’s Santa Monica home after choosing to leave UCLA hospital. "I was holding her in my arms,” Jackie, 90, told the New York Daily Times. “I had just washed her face and told her how pretty she looked, and she just fell asleep. She’s too young to go, but she wasn’t feeling any pain.”

Jackie personally broke the news of Toni’s death to her famous son who said he can’t take any more pain but will always be there for her son. 

On July 13, the actor’s son Sage Moonblood Stallone was found dead in his Studio City, California, apartment. Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, but there were reportedly numerous pill bottles nearby. Sasha Czack, Sage’s mother and Sly’s first wife, said Sage was in pain after dental surgery. A toxicology report is pending.

ROBINHO RULED OUT FOR A MONTH DUE TO THIGH INJURY

AC Millan have been dealt a blow with the confirmation that Robinho faces up to a month on the sidelines with a thigh injury. The  Brazilian forward had a muscle complaint in the opening defeat to Sampdoria in Serie A on Sunday.

The forward was replaced by Urby Emanuelson towards the end of his side's 1-0 reverse to Sampdoria on Sunday, in the opening weekend of the new Serie A season.

A statement on the Rossoneri's official website has revealed the 28-year-old suffered a strain to his right thigh, and is expected to return within the next four weeks, barring any complications.

THREE MONTH OLD BABY STOLEN IN CHURCH

A three-month old baby (not the baby pictured above) has allegedly been stolen by an unknown woman during a church service at St. Theresa's Church, Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident took place during the church service when an unknown woman, who stood at the entrance of the church approached the mother of the stolen baby, Mrs Mbatumun Oseh, and offered to help her hold the baby to avoid being pushed down by crowd at the church.

According to the source, Mrs Oseh obliged her and thereafter the strange woman also offered to sit at the back to avoid distracting members while the baby's mother sat in front. Mrs Oseh however, detailed one of her children to sit close to the woman while the service went on. However, the woman sent the child to a nearby shop to buy her sachet (pure) water, but before the girl came back, the woman had disappeared with the baby.

This is really sad. I hope they find the baby. But leaving your baby with a stranger?

OMG!!! 17 AFGHANS BEHEADED FOR DANCING.

17 civilians were beheaded on Monday in a Taliban-controlled area of southern Afghanistan  because they attended a dance party that flouted the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants. The victims were part of a large group that had gathered late Sunday in Helmand province's Musa Qala district for a celebration involving music and dancing. The Taliban slaughtered them to show their disapproval of the event.
The Taliban ruled the country from 1996 to 2001 and under them all music and film was banned as un-Islamic, and women were barred from leaving their homes without a male family member as an escort.
This is outrageous and inhumane. Losing your life for dancing? Really?

UN MARKS ONE YEAR REMEMBRANCE OF THE SUICIDE BOMB BLAST IN ABUJA

One year ago today, a lone suicide bomber riding a Honda car detonated some Improvised Explosive Devices in the UN House also known as Aruba House. The attack claimed 23 lives, made up of 13 UN staff and 10 non-UN staff.
 The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi, on Sunday in Abuja reiterated Nigeria’s resolve to combat terrorism with all powers whenever it raised its head.

“Nigeria was greatly wounded by the bombing of the UN building last year. We have vivid memory of what happened at the incidence. It was painful because Nigeria has been so dedicated to peace-keeping in the world.We mourn with all the grieving families. We pray God to grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest and quick recovery for all the injured so that they can resume their duties shortly,” he said, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

“Exactly one year ago, what had never happened in the history of Nigeria happened.

“My 16-year-old daughter was in the UN building on the day of the bomb blast, but she escaped. So, I am one of the high government officials directly touched.”

In his address, the Resident Coordinator, UN System in Nigeria, Mr. Daouda Toure, reaffirmed that the UN System in Nigeria would continue its mission to assist in improving the lives of poor people to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy.

“On the occasion of this solemn one year anniversary, the UN teams in Nigeria (composed of agencies and organisations) once again presents its deepest condolences to the families of victims,” he noted.

He reiterated their “gratitude to the Government of and people of Nigeria from all walks of life, irrespective of their religious, philosophical or political beliefs, for their active support, solidarity and commitment to the mission of the UN throughout this difficult period’’.

FIRST MAN TO EVER WALK ON MOON DIES AT 82

Niel Armstrong, the first man to ever walk on the moon has died at the age of 82. He was the commander of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission and the first man ever to walk on the moon. Armstrong died Saturday from complications relating to heart surgery.
